Goldrain Castle is the educational centre of the Vinschgau Valley. Owned by the municipality of Latsch, the castle has been entrusted to the Genossenschaft Bildungshaus Schloss Goldrain until 2040 to fulfil its core mission: education and culture.
Today, the castle stands as a significant testament to regional history and culture. As a venue for educational and cultural events, it attracts both local residents and guests from afar. Its graceful Renaissance architecture and renovated Gothic parlours offer a glimpse into the domestic culture of this southern Alpine region.
But it wasn’t always this way. In the 20th century, Goldrain Castle experienced the turmoil of history first-hand. The two World Wars and political upheavals in Europe and South Tyrol left visible marks on the building, which eventually fell into serious disrepair.
The municipality of Latsch considered selling the castle several times. However, in the 1980s, a local residents committee led by Ernst Steinkeller advocated for its restoration and preservation as a public institution. In September 1987, the Genossenschaft Bildungshaus Schloss Goldrain was founded, and an educational and conference centre was established on the castle grounds. With financial support from the Province of South Tyrol, the castle was restored and made accessible to the public as a place of learning and culture.
In addition to its own educational programs, Goldrain Castle also offers event spaces to companies and associations. To support this, a guest house with underground parking was built just outside the castle walls.
